Ayurveda, Science of Life, is comprised of two words Ayu and Veda.
Ayu means –
शरीरेन्द्रिय सत्वात्मा संयोगो। – चरक संहिता १।४२
śarīrendriya satvātmā saṃyogo।1.42
The union of Shareera (body), Indriya (sense organs), Satva (mind) and Atma (soul).
and
Veda means knowledge.
In short, Ayurveda is the knowledge of the union of body, sense organs, mind and soul.
Principles of Ayurveda
स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणं, आतुरस्य विकार प्रशमनं। (चरक संहित सूत्र ३०।२६)
svasthasya svāsthya rakṣaṇaṃ, āturasya vikāra praśamanaṃ। (Charaka Saṃhita Sūtra 30।26)
Maintain the health of healthy & alleviate the disease of the sick.These two principles can only be accomplished by working on one`s lifestyle,mental status and the specific treatment course.Tridoshas and Prakriti are the two concepts on which the restoration of health and treatment of illness is based , at individual level.The treatment in Ayuveda usually comprises of Herbs usage,Yoga,Panchakarma(detoxification& rejuvenation),lifestyle and dietary changes based on daily routine and climatic conditions.The topics in Ayurveda are extensive and the list in exhaustive.
